Bedford School The Nash and Palmers Buildings

Client: The Harpur Trust

Duration: 24 Weeks

The Bedford School Palmer’s and Nash buildings are two large three story Victorian houses on De Parys Avenue Bedford. The alteration and refurbishment project was carried out over two consecutive years focussing mainly around the school holiday periods. Works were carried out being sympathetic to the Victorian heritage and to meet local planning constraints.
The Palmer’s building was stripped out with some structural alterations carried out to provide larger open planned areas for teaching. New mechanical, electrical and IT systems were installed throughout and the building was decorated both internally and externally with all of the front elevation timber windows renovated.

The Nash Building works involved refurbishment throughout, the removal of the rear single storey flat roof extension and conversion to a pitched roof, creation of a new single storey link extension to provide a new main entrance between the Palmer’s and Nash buildings.

Some major internal alterations were carried out to remove a two story chimney while leaving the external section intact to meet planning constraints. An internal two story steel frame was installed to provide additional support and underpinning of existing foundations were required.

The rear extension was fitted out as a new changing room and toilet area and the main building was refurbished throughout with new mechanical, electrical and IT systems were installed, the building was decorated both internally and externally with all of the front elevation timber windows renovated.

External areas were reconfigured to provide new pedestrian access and dedicated parking areas.
