Built in 1935 and Grade II Listed, The Mounts Fire Station is the oldest fire station in Northamptonshire, and Neville Special Projects is proud to be delivering works at this historically significant and operationally critical site.
Scope of Works
- Demolition of the existing garage structures and removal of a non-licensed asbestos roof - 3-metre-deep adopted drain diversion
- New foundations and block and beam floor
- Rebuild on the existing footprint to create a new Breathing Apparatus Facility and Gym
A concurrent internal refurbishment within the live listed station will also be delivered:
- Removal of redundant steelwork
- Decorations and new carpets to firefighters’ sleeping quarters, breakout spaces, and offices
Before construction could begin, the project required a complex party wall agreement.
Following approval, access was gained to the adjacent garage, and the space required full clearance and sanitisation due to hazardous waste before internal scaffolding could be installed to support the structure during party wall removal and structural works.
This site stands on the original site of Northampton Gaol. Along with the station lying on top of Victorian sewer tunnels, adding further complexity to the works. The station also boasts the UK’s longest operational fire pole, measuring 10 metres (30ft).
Delivered within a live operational yard, from design to handover, this complex and historic project is exactly where we at Neville Special Projects thrive.
